Little Mouse

The best life I can imagine is living as a little mouse in your pocket.

I would lay there, curled up next to your heart.

I would feel the sun seeping through the fabric of your shirt.

I would have a little blanket with me to keep me toasty.

And yes, it would be just a scrap of fabric from an old sweater you used to wear every day.

I would have a pillow too. A soft one.

You don’t even have to ask to know it would be a cotton ball.

Maybe it's stuffed in the fingertip of a mitten or something.

But it wouldn’t be as warm as you.

On nice days I would stand up and stick my head out of your pocket.

Feel the wind on my face and watch the world as you go about your day.

On cold days I would snuggle up in my blanket and pillow.

Listen to your heartbeat.

Sway with the rise and fall of your breathing.

I would fall asleep to the rumbling of your voice.

The mundane parts would be my favorite.

I would hear you talking to the world around you.

Curl up in your scarf engulfed by the smell of you mixed with the produce of the grocery store.

Bounce along to the rhythm of your steps and the rock of your body as you walk down the street.

Hold on to the seams of your pocket as we lean down to sniff a patch of flowers.

Yes, I think the best life I can imagine is the one where I get to be a little mouse in your pocket.
